Abstract
This paper investigates the semantics of grammatical gender by focusing on gender shift as a productive and functionally motivated process. Contrary to views that treat gender as a purely formal agreement category, it is argued that gender can contribute systematically to meaning when nouns participate in structured gender alternations. Building on recent work on German, the study adopts a feature-based lexical model in which gender information is stored in the lexical entry of the noun and assigned by semantic gender-assignment rules. Gender semantics is defined as the non-redundant, meaning-distinguishing potential of gender features on nouns or their agreement targets. By embedding the German data in a typological perspective, the paper identifies a restricted class of shift nouns whose systematic gender change correlates with systematic meaning change and proposes a formal model that captures this relation while excluding arbitrary gender variation and suppletion.
