Abstract
Lajos Kossuth was among the very few Central European freedom fighters of the 1848–49 generation willing and able to conduct extended lecture tours through the United States. At most of the stops on his journey along the East Coast, as well as throughout the Midwest, he received an enthusiastic welcome. This paper will analyze reports in German-American newspapers of the mid- to late-nineteenth century that focus on Lajos Kossuth, starting with his leadership of the Hungarian Fight for Freedom of 1848–49, continuing with his American visit, and concluding with the decades he spent in exile until his death in 1894.
