Abstract

This article examines the characteristics of two synonymous patterns of German light verb constructions through an empirical study. The two constructions under investigation are ‚zur V‑ung gelangenʻ and ‚zur V‑ung kommenʻ. They are regarded as partially filled constructions. The theoretical framework for the study is construction grammar. The light verb constructions examined in this paper are regarded as phraseme constructions (Dobrovol’skij 2011). According to Helbig and Buscha (2001: 68), light verb constructions are considered formal and semantic units consisting of a noun and a functional verb, and possibly a preposition. The paper demonstrates the semantic variability of deverbal abstracts that can fill the slots of the constructions „zur V‑ung gelangen“ and ‚zur V‑ung kommenʻ and compares the global productivity (Baayen 1992) of the two constructions.
